The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
