Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, some rightwing commentators and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of files that contained little new information.
